CURRENT PROJECTS

Clinic at Derechos de los Pobres
(The Rights of the Poor)

Physicians for Humanity (PFH) has affiliated itself with clinics and hospitals in the regions we work so that U.S. students and physicians can work together with local establishments to advance medical infrastructures and create efficient delivery of health care in a dynamic learning environment. Since making our original affiliations, we have begun directly supporting clinics according to a model that leads to complete independence.

Our first clinic in Ecuador lies in a town called Derechos de Los Pobres (The Rights of the Poor). It offers free public health and preventive medical education and affordable primary care. This clinic, albeit physically small, currently offers a site for U.S. doctors and students to volunteer, and serves as the ideological model for future projects.

The key to the success of PFH lies in providing those without adequate health care, the means to support their own systems, while providing a steady flux of student and physician volunteers. This system offers great reward for both the indigent and those who are blessed by their simple grace. We believe that the clinics we support and the affiliations we establish are the key to the manifestation of this reality. Alumni physicians from our student and resident programs will play vital roles in our success and prosperity by giving of their time, talent and treasure.

In all of our efforts we share our joy and gratitude with all we encounter for this blessed opportunity to serve the others.

  • ‘Derechos’ currently serves 400 people in a small village.
  • Patient visits cost $1. Exceptions are made when patients cannot pay.
  • Follow-up visits requested by the physician are free.
  • Medicine is provided at cost, which is nearly free.
  • Our affiliation with REDIMA (He Redeems), a Catholic organization, allows us to provide specialty referrals for patients requiring colposcopy, high-risk pregnancy care, and an obstetric center. These are offered at the same discounted price as regular visits.
  • REDIMA also provides laboratories for pap-smears.

The Damien House:

Damien House is a residential hospital for over 60 Hansen’s patients in Guayaquil, Ecuador. It also treats upwards of 700 outpatients in Guayquil and in remote villages in Ecuador. Our volunteers visit the Damien House as part of their itinerary for the Ecuador experience. A part of our donors contributions go towards supporting the Damien House mission. Visit www.thedamienhouse.org for more information.

The Shelia Dennis House:

The Sheila Dennis House is a women’s shelter located in North Philadelphia. The shelter houses approximately 105 women and aims to assist these women in rebuilding their lives. Students at the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine have been volunteering at this shelter for several years. The volunteer program, run by Physicians for Humanity allows students to visit the shelter on Monday evenings and speak to the women during their life skills class. For example, students may speak about health issues such as heart disease, breast cancer, mental illness, or diet and exercise.
